Don’t make the mistake of going with the standard settings in the Power BI core visual line chart. Here’s how to level up your line chart game in 4 easy steps. 👍
The standard line chart in Power BI doesn’t look too great unless you get jiggy with the settings.
As you can see in this example:

😡 The line and the data levels collide
😡 It’s not really clear where the data points for each month are exactly.
The 4 steps we can take to transform the chart are: 📈
1) Try different line styles, dotted is a favourite of mine.
2) Turn on background for the labels, this will stop the line from overlapping with the label.
(I did a longer post about error bars for the y axis max, you can see it here)
3) Turn on the markers, this makes it easier to see where the data points are exactly.
4) Error Bars: Use error bars to set the Y axis max:
a) Enable with 20% upper & lower bound.
b) Turn the bar on, make the bar colour the same as the chart background colour.
c) Turn off the error bar marker & tooltip.
Combine all these really quick techniques together, and I think you’ll agree you’ve got a chart that is a lot more readable than the standard core visual line chart.
